Top 7 tips to speed up your MAC

MAC OS is one the most preffered computer platform across the world over any other systems like Windows or LINUX. The major reason of this being higher stability and smoother running. OS X is based on unix, which supposedly makes it more robust than Windows. However in the long run your mac device may tend to slow down due to cluttering and low disk space which leads to shaggier performance. Here are some quick tips to speed up your mac which you will find helpful.

  1. First up, you can speed up the boot time of your device by tidying up the desktop. Being the first screen to load after the device starts, your desktop has a part in deciding how long it takes for your device to boot up. Keep is less congested and simple by removing unwanted icons or organising them into folders.
  2. One guaranteed way which will speed up your mac is getting hardware updates for it. You can either upgrade your device's RAM or your Processor, where the cheapest option will be to upgrade the RAM. Make sure you buy one that is compatible and large enough for your device. You can also opt for faster hard drives or a Solid State Drive , which are costlier.
  3. Get more used to monitoring and cleaning utility tools, which carries out system maintanence and cleaning to ensure a smooth run of your system. Program such tools to run as scheduled routines and hence unnecessary files and browser history or any other cache files are regularly removed from your system. This ensures an increase in overall performance of your device. It is highly recommended that all Mac users do such consistent maintenance.
  4. Another way to boost your mac device's performance is to regularly clean up its hard drive. Get rid of those unwanted programs, files, language packs ets. and you can save up some very crucial bytes for your device. The virtual memory on your device needs space and you provide this by cleaning the hard drive more often.
  5. Restart your device more often, which will ensure the removal of those junk and temporary files that cluttered up during runtime. These files consumes disk space and consequently slows down  the device. Go to Utilities > Terminal > type uptime and then hit enter. It will show the time since your last reboot of your device. Better to shut down your device while not in use in contrary to the common practice of putting it to sleep.
  6. Start up items often prove helpful to you, if you actually use the particular application on start up. Otherwise it drains your devices's resources and prove itself to be a burden rather than a gift. You can clear those rarely used applications from your login items list and hence the boot up speed increases and with that the overall performance. For a Mac OS X Lion user, go to System Preferences > System > Users & Groups > Login Items, and uncheck the applications you don't want to show up on startup.
  7. Monitor your devices performance by running the activity monitor. You can see the CPU usage, Random Access Memory (RAM) and virtual memory usage from the monitor, which will help greatly in optimizing your Mac. You can disable on uninstall those applications which don't go easy on your mac's  memory. It also shows the CPU and disk usage of the currently running apps and hence helps you decide which applications are friendly to your device.
