How to Adjust Partition in USB Drive in OS X Mountain Lion

    The need for erasing the hard disk and to resize the Mac partition on the OS X Mountain Lion arises due to OS X Installer reporting that a recovery system could not be created by the installer. This situation arises due to some disk partition configurations. However, normally, we do not need to erase the drive for the installation, upgrade, or the re-installation of the OS X.

    Therefore, the ideal solution lies in the backup of the hard drive and then opts for an erase option for the hard drive.

    Disk Utility is the inbuilt software in OS X Mountain Lion, which can be launched to erase and reformat the storage device. We can then go for an installation of OS X Mountain Lion on the Mac with the external USB drive. The same procedure applies if we are considering FireWire, Thunderbolt storage device, SDHC, or the SDXC card. 

    Before, we proceed with the operations; we need to attach the USB, Thunderbolt drive or the FireWire device to the computer. Otherwise, the SD card slot in Mac is used for the insertion of the SDHC or the SDXC card.

How to Erase and Reformat the Storage Device?

The following steps are taken to resize Mac partition:

1. The place where the attached storage device is displayed along with the size in GB is clicked

2. The partition tab is clicked

3. The “1. Partition” is clicked and we must not click more than one partition

    We must click the GUID radio button and then proceed to click OK. 

5. In the format field, the Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) is selected.

6. We press the Apply button.

7. The drive name is entered in the name field

8. We need to click partition, only after verifying that we need to erase and format Mac partition

9. When the reformatting gets over, the Disk Utility is quitted, from the Disk Utility Menu.

Next, we need to install the OS X.

OS X Installation

Downloading and Locating the Installer

    For the installation to take place, first we need to take help of the Mac App Store application form the Apple Menu. With the same version of OS X installed in the Mac, this application will display the OS X as “installed” in the purchase menu. This will actual prevent the downloading.

    However, for the re downloading of the installer, we need to click the purchase tab, by pressing and holding the option key. The item that needs the downloading will display “install”. Spotlight is used for the searching with the “Install OS X” on the computer. A copy of the OS X Installer will exist in the connected drive, in the Applications folder.

Steps to Install OS X, On the External Volume

1. The downloaded Installer from the Mac App Store is launched

2. The OS X installation is completed, as per the instructions provided on the screen

3.  “Show All Drives” has to be chosen, at the time for the selection of the drive for installation

4.  This must be the external storage USB drive, connected for this purpose

5.  When the installation of the OS X is completed in the external drive, then we need to restart the computer with its help

Minimum Requirements for The External USB drive
  • For the OS X Lion the storage device must have at least 13 GB available space.
  • It is assumed that a backup of the external USB drive must be kept in a separate drive
  • This method will only allow to install a version of OS X, that is compatible with the Mac model
  • The storage device will use the GUID partition scheme and Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) formats only, which are prerequisites for the OS X Installation and the Recovery partition on the external USB drive.
