How to Use Xbox 360/One or PlayStation 3/4 Controller on PC

You have an Xbox or PlayStation at home? And you want a controller to play on your PC? You don’t have to buy yourself a new controller but you can just use the Xbox or PlayStation controller you have on your PC to play games. Through this article I will tell how to do so. Playing with a controller is more enjoyable than using the keyboard or mouse.

Xbox One

If you have an Xbox One controller, all you have to do is to download the device drivers that make the Xbox One controller compatible with Windows 7 or 8. You can download the driver software from here. After downloading just run the setup file and agree to all the terms and conditions. After the installation is finished, connect your Xbox One controller via USB cable and start gaming.

Xbox 360

Using the Xbox 360 controller is relatively easy. Just go to this link and download the necessary drivers after selecting your operating system. The drivers officially support both 32bit and 64bit versions of Windows vista, windows 7 and Windows 8. After installation of the drivers, you can start playing your favorite games using the controller.

PlayStation 3

It is quite difficult to use PlayStation controllers on PC. First you have to go the MotionInJoy website and download the required drivers. Make sure you get the right version (32bit or 64bit) of drivers suitable for your Windows. After download is complete, unzip it and run the .exe file and complete the installation. Connect your PS3 controller. You will notice that Windows is installing the necessary drivers but this is not enough. Open DS3Tool and click the Load Driver button. You will get a warning message but you can go ahead and install the driver software.

The PS3 controller is ready for use when you see “SUCCESS: Install Completed” on the installation window. Select the Profile button, and you can see the controller under the Connected game controller(s) drop down list. By clicking the Vibration Testing button, you can test if Windows recognizes your controller.

To calibrate the PS3 controller, open Game Controller Settings from Start Menu > Devices and Printers > right clicking on HID-compliant game controller > Game Controller Settings. Click on Properties and calibrate the controller.

You can also connect the controller via Bluetooth. Click the BlueToothPair button and then click Pair Now button. This will pair your Windows with the PS3 controller. Now disconnect the controller from the computer, go to the profile page, and click the “Vibration Testing” button to test if the controller is connected via Bluetooth. If your controller is vibrating, this means that your PS3 controller is now connected to your Bluetooth. If it vibrates, now you can use the controller without a USB cable.

PlayStation 4

To use a PS4 controller, you need to first download and install the Xbox 360 drivers.  Microsoft .NET 4.0, Visual C 2010 Runtime, and the latest DirectX Runtime are also required for setting up the PS4 controller on your PC. Afterwards you have to download the DS4Tool and unzip it. Then, open the folder named Virtual Bus Driver and double-click the ScpDriver application to install it. Bus Device and Bus Driver will be listed under the install summary, if it was installed correctly.

Before you connect the PS4 controller to the computer, make sure no games or other related software is running. After connecting the controller using a microUSB cable, open the ScpServer application which is located at the DS4Tool folder. The controller will be automatically detected; but if not you will have to do either of the following things:  click the Stop button, followed by the Start button to restart detection; or ensure the Xbox 360 drivers and ScpDrivers were installed properly.

The PS4 controller can also be connected via Bluetooth but you need Bluetooth 2.1 or higher. You should enable the controller's Bluetooth pairing mode. Just hold both the Share and PlayStation buttons on the controller until the LED light begins flashing. Open the Control Panel on your computer and, under Hardware and Sound, choose to add a new device. Select the game controller, and open the ScpServer application after pairing is complete. The software should automatically detect the controller.
